McLaren team principal Andrea Stella believes Lando Norris is now performing at the level expected from a Formula One world champion. His comments followed Norris’s victory in the Dutch Grand Prix, where the driver had to recover the lead on the track.

Norris started from pole position but lost first place to Kimi Antonelli at the second start. He did not force an early move. He protected his tyres, stayed close to the Mercedes and waited until the passing chance became clear.

Norris waited for the right moment to pass

The race restarted after Max Verstappen crashed on the opening lap. Antonelli made the better launch and moved ahead of Norris. The Mercedes driver then controlled the first part of the new race, while Norris studied the gap and the condition of his hard tyres. McLaren could see that Norris had more speed over a long run. He reduced the distance without using all of his tyre life in a few laps. That choice mattered because the track still offered limited grip and several drivers struggled to keep a stable pace.

Norris finally attacked around the outside at the first corner. Lewis Hamilton was also ahead on a different strategy, so the McLaren driver had to judge two cars and a narrow route. He completed both passes on the same lap and returned to the lead.

Norris managed tyre wear before taking the lead

Stella was especially pleased with the way Norris brought the hard tyres into their best working range. The driver found grip without sliding too much. That allowed him to improve his lap times while Antonelli began to lose the advantage he had built after the restart.

Mercedes later gave Antonelli another set of fresh tyres. Norris stayed out, yet he continued to produce competitive times. He did not need a final stop and finished more than eleven seconds ahead of the second car.

The performance showed more than raw speed. Norris changed his approach as the race changed. He remained calm after losing the lead, accepted that the pass would take time and used the strongest part of the McLaren only when the move was ready.

Race stage Norris’s action Result
Second start Stayed close to Antonelli Kept the win within reach
Middle stint Protected the hard tyres Closed the gap
Lap 54 Passed Antonelli and Hamilton Returned to first place
Final laps Stayed on the same tyres Won by more than eleven seconds

Two straight victories improved Norris’s championship position

Norris arrived in the Netherlands after winning the previous Grand Prix in Hungary. The Zandvoort result gave him consecutive victories and added important points to his championship total. The Dutch weekend did not begin as a simple route to first place. McLaren had to understand why the car had looked less convincing during the Sprint. Engineers adjusted the setup and improved how the car used its tyres before the main race.

Stella said the most encouraging part is that Norris continues to improve. The team principal pointed to a change that began during the 2025 season. Since then, Norris has become more consistent when a weekend does not follow the original plan.

McLaren still has work before the next race

One strong weekend does not settle the season. McLaren must now prepare for Monza, where long straights and heavy braking will create a different test.

The setup that worked at Zandvoort cannot simply be copied. Norris also knows that the next contest may require a different kind of patience. A small qualifying gap can place several cars together, and slipstreaming can change the order before the first corner.

Victory at Zandvoort nevertheless provides a clear standard. McLaren turned an uncertain start into a controlled race, and Norris completed the decisive overtake without damaging his tyres. That combination explains why Stella described his current level in championship terms.

Norris and McLaren communicated clearly during the race

Norris asked for clear information about the cars ahead and his tyres. McLaren answered with short updates and kept the plan stable. Calm communication helped him choose the right moment to attack.
