Honda will introduce its Spec 2 Formula One power unit at the Dutch Grand Prix. Both Aston Martin cars will receive the revised package at Zandvoort. The update follows a filming-day test at the Hungaroring.

Honda changed the pre-chamber, piston shape, and lubrication system. Engineers also worked on reducing internal friction. The revisions target performance and reliability after a difficult first half of 2026.

Revised combustion parts aim to improve engine efficiency

The pre-chamber helps control combustion inside the engine. A revised shape changes how the fuel mixture begins burning. Honda paired that work with a different piston design. Lubrication changes address friction between moving internal parts. Lower friction preserves energy that would otherwise become heat. It also changes the loads carried by several engine components.

These areas operate together during every acceleration phase. A single change may affect temperature, efficiency, and reliability elsewhere. Honda tested the complete specification before its race introduction. The package remains part of the 2026 power-unit rules. It is not a new engine formula. Honda has refined its existing design within the permitted development framework.

Aston Martin completed an initial test in Hungary

Aston Martin used a filming day at the Hungaroring before Zandvoort. The running provided an initial systems check for the revised unit. Filming-day mileage remains limited and does not replace a full test. Engineers examined temperatures, pressures, vibration, and basic driveability. They also checked communication between the engine and chassis systems.

Any fault found there was easier to study before a race weekend.

The Dutch event uses a Sprint schedule with one practice session. Earlier track running therefore carries additional value. Aston Martin enters Friday with real data from the revised hardware. The test did not reproduce a complete Grand Prix distance. Zandvoort still provides the first competitive comparison. Both cars will run against rivals under the same weekend conditions.

The latest chassis package remains on both Aston Martin cars

Aston Martin introduced 16 listed car updates at the Hungarian Grand Prix. That package changed several aerodynamic and mechanical areas. The team then finished 13th and 14th in the race. Those positions did not deliver championship points. They provided data about the revised chassis before the summer break. Honda‘s Spec 2 unit now joins that developing package.

Aston Martin holds tenth place in the teams’ standings with one point. Its 2026 partnership with Honda has faced pace and reliability problems. The Zandvoort update addresses one part of that wider deficit. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll require predictable power delivery through banked corners. Stable energy recovery also matters across the short lap. Engineers will compare both cars after each session.

Zandvoort provides the first competitive test for Spec 2. Coastal wind often carries sand onto the Zandvoort surface. Grip changes as cars clean the racing line. The banked turns also place unusual loads on tyres and power delivery.

Friday practice begins at 12:30 local time. Sprint Qualifying starts four hours later. Honda receives little time to solve an unexpected issue before the first competitive session.

The Sprint covers 24 laps on Saturday. The Grand Prix follows over 72 laps on Sunday. Those distances provide separate tests of performance and durability. Honda has identified the parts changed inside Spec 2. Aston Martin has completed an initial track check in Hungary. Zandvoort now supplies the first competitive result for the revised power unit.

Both cars provide data for the Spec 2 comparison

Both Aston Martin cars carry the same power-unit specification at Zandvoort. Engineers may still use different chassis settings during practice. Matching engine hardware makes direct reliability comparisons easier. The team will record energy deployment across every straight. It will also track temperatures during slower banked sections. Those readings show whether the new parts behave within expected limits.

A clean Sprint provides useful running before Sunday’s longer race. Any issue also appears earlier than a normal Grand Prix start. The compressed format therefore increases both risk and available evidence. Honda‘s work continues after the Dutch weekend. One result will not settle the season. It will establish the first verified baseline for the Spec 2 package.
